The cottage and museum is contained in a small area of land that the John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum Trust owns within the grounds of Arbigland Estate, thirteen miles south west of Dumfries, Scotland on the A710.
John Paul Jones was born in the cottage on the 6th July 1747. The two-room cottage is furnished in the style of the 1770s. In a room to the back is a reconstruction of the cabin of the "Bonhomme Richard". Lieutenant Pinckham of the United States Navy to ensure the continued survival of the building built that room in 1831.
The museum is in a nearby building and has an exhibition gallery and a museum shop.
